Schedule

We will meet first for an orientation class at 2:30pm on Monday January 6, 2014 in Bethune 225. We will not meet every week. Emails will be sent well in advance notifying you when an in-class session will be held.

First Lab Report DueFriday January 24, 2014
Second Lab Report DueFriday February 14, 2014
Third Lab Report DueFriday March 7, 2014
Fourth Lab Report DueFriday March 28, 2014
Presentations Mondays March 24 & 31, 2014
Oral Exam TimesT.B.A.

For your first lab report, I am offering a Lab Report Review, where you can schedule a time to come to my office so I can look at your completed (or nearly completed) lab report and offer some helpful comments before you submit the report to the TA for marking. You can sign-up up a lab review using the online system (see below) scheduled on or before January 22, 2014.

Reports are due by 4:30pm on the due date, and are to be handed in to Room 122 Petrie to either M. George or N. Balaskas. If neither is present, submit the report to Lauren in the Physics Office room 128 Petrie.

Grading Scheme

Students must complete 4 experiments with reports, an oral exam, and a presentation on a current experimental physics topic.

Each lab report will be graded out of 20. The marks for each lab report will be assigned as follows:

Abstract2
Introduction/Theory5
Procedure/Method3
Results/Analysis5
Discussion/Conclusion4
References1
Total20

The Final Mark for the course will be assigned as follows:

Lab Reports 75%
Oral Exam15%
Presentation 10%

Penalties

  • For each day late, your lab report will lose 10%. If the report is due Friday, and is handed in on Monday you will loose 20% from the mark for that report.
  • If you come unprepared for a demonstration by the TA, you will loose 5%. You are expected to have read completely and have a basic idea of the experiment beforehand.
  • If you do not show up for a scheduled demonstration within 10 minutes of the scheduled time, you will have to schedule a new time for a demonstration, and will suffer a 5% penalty for wasting the TAs time.

Laboratory Manual

To sign up for an experiment : Experiment Sign-up

Your username is your student number, and the password is studentnumberLastname (note the capitalization of the first letter of your last name).

Please submit a request to sign-up at least 24 hours before the time you wish to perform the lab. You will receive an email confirmation from the responsible TA confirming the time and date. Please show up prepared for the demo, and on time!
